Matthew Perry who was famous for his role as Chandler Bing in the American sitcom ‘Friends’ was found dead in his jacuzzi on 28th October 2023.

A Post-mortem was conducted which revealed a High Concentration of Medicine known as ‘Ketamine’ in his blood.

Matthew Perry was supplied this medicine of about $ 50,000 a few weeks before his demise.

Dr Mark Chavez –

He has pleaded guilty to arranging and distributing ketamine. He has surrendered his passport and Medical license. He will not be practicing medicine and is currently awaiting court orders.

Eric Fleming-

He has pleaded guilty to obtaining ketamine from Sangha and distributing 50 vials to Kenneth Iwamasa who is Mr Perry’s live-in Personal Assistant.

Kenneth Iwamasa

He has pleaded guilty to obtaining ketamine and injecting it into Mr Perry without any medical training, including the injection of ketamine which was given on October 28, 2023.

Jasveen Sangha and Dr. Salvador Plasenci

These Two have pleaded not guilty and are currently awaiting trial.

WHAT IS KETAMINE?

Ketamine-

It is a slow-acting Anaesthetic medicine that is known to produce Dissociative anesthesia.

Dissociative Anaesthesia

In Dissociative Anaesthesia, the following characteristics are noted-

  1. Reduction in pain of the patients.
  2. The Patient temporarily loses his or her ability to move the limbs.
  3. Amnesia which is memory loss occurs, it is temporary and mild in nature.
  4. Patients can go to mild sleep, which means patient will be aware of the things happening around them but they will not react to it.

The patient is not able to process the sensory stimulus and does not react to it, so it seems the patient is dissociated from his or her surrounding and body too.

Site Of Action-

It acts on the Cortical and Subcortical regions of the brain.

Ketamine Effect On The Body-

Respiratory System-

This medicine does not suppress the respiratory system. It helps in dilation of the bronchi which improves breathing.

It maintains the airway reflexes.

Cardiovascular System-

This medicine increase the Heart rate, Cardiac output (Amount of blood pumped out of the heart per minute), and Blood Pressure.

This effect on the heart occurs because ketamine stimulates the sympathetic system of the heart.

Other Effects on Various Body parts-

  1. Involuntary movements of the hands Or legs can occur.
  2. Hallucinations are reported by some patients.
  3. Delirium (confusion) can occur.

ketamine is metabolized in the Liver.

Uses of Ketamine-

  1. It is used as Anaesthetic in operations especially the operation of the Head and neck region.
  2. Doctors sometimes use it in asthmatic patients to relieve bronchospasms.
  3. It is used in the dressing of patients who are suffering from burn wounds.
  4. It is used in Angiography in combination with Diazepam.
  5. It is used in surgeries done on patients involved in accidents or those with the tendency to bleed.

Contraindication of Ketamine

This medicine should be used with caution in patients suffering from Hypertension, Congestive cardiac failure, and Ischemic Heart Disease patients.

It should be used only if no other anesthetic medicine can be used.

It should also be avoided in patients suffering from High intracranial pressure.
